Brand names: Chlorpromazine   Thorazine

Phenothiazines are used to treat serious mental and emotional disorders, including schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. Some are used also to control agitation in certain patients, severe nausea and vomiting, severe hiccups, and moderate to severe pain in some hospitalized patients. Chlorpromazine is used also in the treatment of certain types of porphyria, and with other medicines in the treatment of tetanus. Phenothiazines may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.Phenothiazines may cause unwanted, unattractive, and uncontrolled face or body movements that may not go away when you stop taking the medicine. They may also cause other serious unwanted effects. You and your doctor should talk about the good this medicine will do as well as the risks of using it. Also, your doctor should look for early signs of these effects at regular visits. Your doctor may be able to stop or decrease some unwanted effects, if they do occur, by changing your dose or by making other changes in your treatment. These medicines are available only with your doctor's prescription.Levoprome(R) (methotrimeprazine) is no longer available in the United States. At the end of May 1998, Immunex Corporation stopped marketing it.Once a medicine has been approved for marketing for a certain use, experience may show that it also is useful for other medical problems. Although these uses are not included in product labeling, phenothiazines are used in certain patients with the following medical conditions: Chronic neurogenic pain (certain continuing pain conditions)Huntington's chorea (hereditary movement disorder)Migraine headaches

Chlorpromazine is an anti-psychotic medication in a group of drugs called phenothiazines (FEEN-oh-THYE-a-zeens). It works by changing the actions of chemicals in your brain. Chlorpromazine is used to treat psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia or manic-depression, and severe behavioral problems in children. It is also used to treat nausea and vomiting, anxiety before surgery, chronic hiccups, acute intermittent porphyria, and symptoms of tetanus. Chlorpromazine may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Chlorpromazine for Hiccups that are Hard to Cure: Episodes of intractable hiccups were alleviated with 100mg IM dose and 50 mg po dose every four hours for approx. 2 days. My hiccups lasted 2-3 days before going to ER for this med. Have had them on and off for 20 years and this dosage always works for me. I get the hiccups on average every 2-3 years.

Thorazine for Hiccups: My husband normally never has the hiccups but on the night of day 3 after having bowel resection surgery from diverticulitis, he was no longer passing gas. Instead he was belching, burping and hiccuping. He would hiccup for hours then stop for a bit and this just kept going on and on increasing the pain of the surgical site and getting no sleep. On the night of day 6,Thorazine was added to his IV and within 10 minutes the hiccups were gone and he was finally sleeping comfortably.

Thorazine for Light Sedation: The intramuscular is far better than oral, I found. The only drawback is that you will have a very sore bottom afterwards. Thorazine IM does hurt, but it's well worth it in the long run if your stomach gets upset very easily. The onset is much quicker, yet the effect is more mellow than the same dose given orally. Again, Thorazine IM does hurt so keep that in mind if it ever suggested.

Chlorpromazine for Hiccups that are Hard to Cure: My husband has had 2 surgeries in the past 10 years and got hiccups after both of them. The first surgery's hiccups lastest 3 days off and on, mostly on. I called the surgeon and he immediately called in oral Thorazine for him...one dose stopped them. His second surgery, he was unable to take Thorazine due to a potential interaction with another drug he had already been given. They tried Reglan, but it only helped for a few hours and the hiccups came back. This problem after surgery is thought to be from a sensitive phrenic nerve...the diaphragm is irritated by the anesthesia gas and can cause the person to have hiccups for days... Hope this info helps someone else!
