5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan)

5-hydroxytryptophan, also known as 5-HTP, is a dietary supplement made from the seeds of the African plant Griffonia simplicifolia. 5-hydroxytryptophan has been used in alternative medicine as an aid to relieve the symptoms of anxiety, depression, fibromyalgia, insomnia, chronic headaches, premenstrual syndrome, binge-eating related to obesity, attention deficit disorder, and chronic headaches. 5-hydroxytryptophan has also been used in treating certain seizures and symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Not all uses for 5-hydroxytryptophan have been approved by the FDA. 5-hydroxytryptophan should not be used in place of medication prescribed for you by your doctor. 5-hydroxytryptophan is often sold as an herbal supplement. There are no regulated manufacturing standards in place for many herbal compounds and some marketed supplements have been found to be contaminated with toxic metals or other drugs. Herbal/health supplements should be purchased from a reliable source to minimize the risk of contamination. 5-hydroxytryptophan may also be used for other purposes not listed in this product guide.

5-HTP for Social phobia (Social anxiety disorder): Dissappointing tryptophan substitute For those among you not well-versed in neurochemistry, 5-HTP is 5-hydroxy-tryptophan -- the immediate precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin, which I know you all are quite familiar with. Another supplement, L-Tryptophan, was banned in the U.S. market in 1989 following an outbreak of a flu-like disease called eosinophilia myalgia syndrome caused by a contaminated batch of tryptophan from Japan. Officially, the death count due to this contamination stands at 37. However, tryptophan was also quite possibly the greatest natural supplement out there for mood disorders, and especially for depression, panic, OCD and insomnia. 5-HTP sounded promising to me though when I first heard of it--it's one step closer to formation of serotonin than tryptophan is. That is to say, tryptophan is converted into 5-hydroxy-tryptophan which is in turn converted to serotonin. So I bought a bottle of Natrol's 50mg capsules and began taking two capsules a day religiously for several months. Several months into it, no effect. Well, that was $20 wasted each of those months. Luckily, I have recently been made aware that L-Tryptophan is once again available for sale OTC, after years of first being banned entirely followed by years of being available only on prescription. I'll post my experience with it once I get the chance to try it. Warning: As the rating entitled "Reacts with some meds" by Greefee suggests, 5-HTP should only be taken with serotonergic antidepressant medications under a doctor's supervision. The serotonergic antidepressants include: Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Luvox, Celexa, Lexapro, Effexor, Nardil, Parnate, Tofranil, Norpramin, Elavil, Pamelor, Vivactil, Surmontil, Sinequan, Anafranil, Ludiomil, Asendin, Desyrel, Serzone, Remeron, Cymbalta, St. John's Wort, SAM-e, and Meridia. Caution should be advised when 5-HTP is taken with lithium, Xanax, Deracyn, Klonopin, Desoxyn, and Ultram, which have some serotonerg

5-HTP for Depression: 5-HTP I gave this to my 12 yr old daughter instead of Ritalin. She was starting to have severe mood swings from hormones and her ADHD. It worked wonders. When we ran out, I couldn't seem to find it anywhere, but she hasn't needed it. Not the Ritalin either.

5-HTP for Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD): My naturopath wanted me to begin taking 5-HTP for anxiety. I also have clinical depression. 5-HTP gives me terrible nausea if I take too much, and it makes me sleepy if I take it during the day, so I take 100-200 mg before bed with no problems. I fall asleep immediately, I sleep amazingly, and I wake up in a pretty good mood (I used to be an insufferable grouch). I also have fewer food cravings, particularly for sweet or starchy foods.

5-HTP for Multiple sclerosis - Relapsing-remitting (RRMS): 5-HTP the amount of Tryptophan in 5-HTP, although reportedly more purified, just did not work for me as the pulled from the market L-Tryptophan. My doc had me on 3Gm of that at bedtime for years and I slept well and did not have migraines and my MS symptoms ramped way down. When it was withdrawn, these symptoms worsened and the 5-HTP and 10-HTP did nothing even remotely similar as the straight L-Tryptophan for me.

5-HTP for Obesity: Great product 5-HTP is known to regulate seritonin in the brain. This controls appetite. Regulates mood. This is the cheapest pill I have ever used, and it works. It does take a few weeks of constant use to notice changes.

5-HTP for Bipolar II disorder: Like a Light Switch Fatigue and concentration issues are that hardest symptoms for me to treat. I went from staying in bed to a normal productivity level almost immediately. Since I've only been taking this for a month, I cannot say what the long term benefits will be.

5-HTP for Autism: I have a severely autistic son with severe, episodic self injurious behaviors and insomina. We have tried just about everything under the sun to help him. Last month I began 5-htp, tid (3 x day, divided doses) and have seen a great reduction in SIB, however I don't want to get too excited, because it's too soon to tell, so I'll be back in a few months to report the progress. Interestingly, he'd been on prozac and zoloft in past with no effect on reducing self injury. So, we'll see. That said, my son is also a complex case of autism and self injury (as seen on you tube under autism self injury) so if 5-Htp reduces SIB, it may not affect things like sudden loud noises that could trigger head punching fits....I think the 5-Htp is a great potential overall intervention for raising the threshold of his ability to control his self inflicted bouts. I'm sure excited to see if this will finally be something we can use for long term that will be a sure thing to help him stop beating himself.

5-HTP for Autism: Essentially like an SSRI If you have used an SSRI, initially had good results, then a bottoming out after a couple of weeks, I would imagine things are the same with this. If an SSRI has been great for you, without side-effects, maybe it would be an effective alternative.

5-HTP for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: Great results We have used 5 HTP for several family members who have OCD, anxiety and depression and had very good results. It does not have the side effects that SSRI's have and does the same job.

5-HTP for Bipolar II disorder: My experience with HTP I had tried 5-HTP for my bipolar, and found it as effective as prescription meds, without the side effects. When you first start taking it, it helps you sleep, so I took mine before bed, as I have pretty bad insomnia. It also really decreased my appetite, although I didn't lose weight, probably due to my other health conditons. After awhile though, you have to increase your dosage to get the same results. I have heard that after 3 years, your body gets used to it and it no longer works, but I haven't been taking it long enough to know that. Aslo, stopping it does not cause any withdrawals-all in all, I highly recommend it as an alternative medicine choice.

5-HTP for Depression: Inexplicable! a miracle, after so many years feeling depressed despite my very successful life, I finally felt great and confident for the first time. I use to feel sad, angry, crying inside myself all time, any little emotional thing would get me down. Now that I m taking 5htp I feel like something heavy has been taking off from my body, I feel light, no sadness, no desperation or emotional needeness as I use to fell all time! It started working just an hour after I took 5htp 100mg. I could have cry for years over a lost boyfriend for nothing, with this thing, I stopped thinking about my ex just 4 days after I started taking 5htp, this is a miracle, give it a try! The only thing I noticed, I eat more now, maybe because I wasn't digesting correctly before and this pill is helping me digest, but I just feel great

5-HTP for Social phobia (Social anxiety disorder): Good for depression, OK for anxiety 5-HTP works relatively well for depression and seems to help somewhat for social anxiety. Social anxiety is more related to low levels of the neurotransmitter GABA, than low seratonin levels. Still, I did notice a better overall mood and contentment. My wife used 5-HTP for several years (with ok results) for her depression. Suddenly, it no longer worked for her. I understand that after taking 5-HTP long term, the body upregulates an enzyme that prevents 5-HTP from crossing the blood brain barrier.

5-HTP for Postpartum depression: NOTHING This did NOTHING for me, I have been suffereing severe postpartum depresson and anxiety and I took 300 mgs of this stuff before bed and nothing happened. I kept waiting to see if it would work because they say it can take a while to build up in your system, but after 5 weeks of NO improvement, I quit.

5-HTP for Insomnia: I tried this on and off a few times only. One of the times I tried one 50 mg pill which did nothing for me at the time. For that reason, I tried taking a second pill, which gave me the heart palpitations/breathlessness that some people here described. After a while, I tried it again and it made me sleepy. So for mild insomnia, it is pretty good. It did make me feel a litle bit like I feel after eating turkey or eating sweets, so I can see why people take it for anxiety or depression. I would take this again if having insomnia or if I am particularly very stressed on a certain day. However, I would not take more than 50 mg once a day because of the side effects.

5-HTP for Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS): 5-HTP I remember the good ole' days when you could buy just plain Tryptophan at the health food store,It was my sleep wonder medicine... Maybe this time I purchased the wrong stuff because it also contained a small dose of vitamin B6, which seemed to wire me up instead of allowing the trypto to calm me down and allow me to sleep. So I no longer take this.

5-HTP for Panic disorder / agoraphobia: It works for me. I have recently been experiencing panic attacks and depression. I decided to try 5HTP before I went to the doctor and received a prescription for something to treat it. It has worked for me I feel calm and relaxed. I would recommend trying it.
