Elmiron (Pentosan Polysulfate Sodium)

Pentosan polysulfate sodium works like an anticoagulant (blood thinner) that prevents the formation of blood clots. However, it is used to treat bladder pain and discomfort caused by cystitis (bladder inflammation or irritation). Pentosan polysulfate sodium may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Elmiron for Bladder Wall Inflammation: I have been using Elmiron for 1 1/2 years. It took time to start being effective (4 months) and now after all this time, I am in pain again. Not as sever yet but for it to come back I am sure the full pain will return. The doctors do not want to prescribe anything else for pain because this is suppose to take care of it. What is wrong with doctors today? We know our bodies better than anyone. I am not a junkie, and don't even take asprin unless I really nead it. Maybe I need to find a doctor who has had IC for awhile. I would recommend Elmiron to everyone who has IC, however don't count on it forever.

I tried to stop it but the pain returned after three weeks. I am so happy with the results of Elmiron. I never had any side effects and I can eat and drink anything I want. It gave me my life back. Elmiron for Interstitial cystitis: Giving It A High Rating * * * UPDATE * * * OCTOBER 14, 2006: Although I feel that Elmiron has helped me, I think I have come to the point in my IC journey where I can begin to focus more on alternative treatments and self-help, as opposed to prescription medication. I have been cutting back my dose over the past few months, and I want today to be the day I officially go off of Elmiron. While I feel I don't need this medication any longer, I still think it is a worthwhile med to try, and I would still recommend it to others. * * * * * * * * * As of now, I'm on a combo of Elmiron, Urocit-k, and Hydroxyzine, and I feel good most of the time. My symptoms are usually pretty mild. Since I started taking all of these meds continously at the same time, I'm not sure which one has helped me out. So, I'm going to give all three of the above meds a high rating, at least for now. P.S. I used to always take Elmiron on an empty stomach, but that was a total pain! Now I just take it regardless of when I eat, and I haven't noticed any difference in its effectiveness.

Elmiron for Interstitial Cystitis: I was diagnosed with interstitial cystitis in February 2000. Since that time, I've been taking the prescribed dosage of 400 mg daily. This has helped my interstitial cystitis symptoms tremendously. I had suffered for a long time before being diagnosed properly, so when this medication was presented to me and I took it for a couple of months, my pain was gone. I was so excited to finally get relief. Unfortunately, I had a recent blood test to check my liver enzymes. The AST was 61 and the ALT was 100, both of which are normal between 3 and 35. My physician wants me to decrease my dosage of Elmiron and check me again in 6 weeks. I'm very concerned about the high levels of enzymes in my blood. Be careful and keep a check on your liver.

Elmiron for Interstitial cystitis: Elmiron I am 43 years old. I have been reading very negative comments not only on this drug, but several others, for different types of diseases such as IBD. I have been taking 1 100 mg of Elmiron for 3 to 4 years. It took around 4 months to see any benefits. I was also prescribed Zyrtec an allergy pill to take each day. When I have a flare-up (in which is very seldom, I will take 1 preridium) for mild pain. Pain seems to go away after a couple of days. I seem to do a lot better on 1 tablet rather than 3 for some reason. I have had no hair loss! or any other side effects. Sure I get sore bones now and then, but I am 43 and out of shape. Elmiron has been a very good drug for me. I would highly recommend it. I will advise you that I believe this drug works very well in a combination with other drugs as I stated. Find a good Dr. I have one of the best in Tulsa Ok. I think this drug is fairly expensive, but my insurance covers it.

Elmiron for Interstitial cystitis: I've been taking elmiron, three pills daily, for about 6 months now and the difference is like night and day. Before I had near constant, painful feelings of urgency and emptied my bladder 20+ times per day. Everytime I voided I had burning pain throughout my pelvis. Now I feel "normal" again. Most days I have no pain at all and my frequency is down to about 8 times a day. I do have the occasional flare up, especially if I forget to take a dose. On the other hand, I didn't have recognizable flare ups before- it was only really painful or even more painful. I didn't experience any noticable side effects except the tendency to bleed longer when injured (I'm a klutz). The only real downside to this treatment is the cost. Under my insurance I pay $35 a month which is pretty manageable. To buy it out of pocket would be over $300/month so it probably isn't feasible for those without insurance.

I started feeling better w/in only a couple of weeks on the meds, but not w/out the horrible side effects. I already had migraines to begin w/ & the Elmiron added to those by double. My hair started to fall out by the handfulls. Then for someone who normally smelt clean all of the time, I had a horrible body odor. I cked & that was not listed as a side effect anywhere. I could take a shower & w/in 30 mins felt like I needed to go take another shower my body was putting off such an odor. I finally, after several months, could not take the side effects any longer. I had to stop the Elmiron. It took, at least, 6 mons for my hair to stop falling out. I had to search out alternative treatment & learn to live w/ the pain rather than the side effects.

Elmiron for Interstitial cystitis: elmiron is a lifesaver I have been taking elmiron for almost 4 years. Before my diagnosis of IC, I went to the emergency room twice in 1 year in terrible pain. I was beginning to think I would never feel better. Once on elmiron I rarely have symptoms, and they are tolerable when I do. Usually a cause of something I ate. I stay away from caffeine and citrus, but elmiron allows me to even eat some of the bad foods for people with IC. The biggest problem is the expense, but it is well worth it, to live normal again.

I have been taking vicodin for pain (bladder, hips, and legs) but have built up a tolerance for it and I am going to a pain management doctor now. I am also taking heparin instillations, but putting a catheter, even a baby feeding tube in my urethra "shocks" my urethra and I'm unable to urinate. So, I feel like I'm back to square one. I had surgery and they saw my bladder was inflamed. My urologist sent me to a different urologist. He is a specialist for IC. I found out i was pregnant and stopped taking it. I had severe pain immediately. Then had to start taking it again. If you have IC and become pregnant try to stay on elmiron if at all possible. I had a miscarriage at about three and a half months. After that I continued to take it. But it has not had the same effect as last time. It's like all my symptoms came back worse. If at all possible do not stop taking it if you can. A break in the routine can take months to correct. I also take a med. called Urelle it helps when you have a lot of burning pain.I have been diagnosed with IC for a year . I still have problems remembering to not rush to the doctor with a UTI for antibiotics. The flare ups feel just like an infection. I had a cyscostopy done and they found scar tissue inside my bladder it is very painful. I didn't know how common that was for others with IC.

Elmiron for Interstitial cystitis: I have been taking Elmiron for a little over a year now. I am down to 3 pills a day now from 4 due to expense and it still works really well. I did try to stop all together and my symptoms returned so I may try to go down to two pills and see if the results are the same... I just take my pills right before I go to bed and dont even drink a full glass of water and sometimes it hasnt been a full 2hrs since I have eaten either and I am still fine.. I eat and drink whatever I want with no ill effects while on this medication. Oh and no side effects at all. Also this is the only thing I am on for my IC. When first diagnosed I had two other scripts for Ametriptyline and then an antehistamine but I stopped taking both of those several months later and that choice did not effect me at all. Elmiron for Interstitial cystitis: It's Helping With My Pain I started on Elmiron 100 mg 2 times a day about 2 months ago (dose was prescribed as 3 times a day, but it was giving me headaches, so I take it twice a day instead). Before Elmiron, I was taking Levaquin 250 mg daily for months and it was no longer effective--my doctor and I realized I must have a problem other than a bacterial infection, and I started the Elmiron. Elmiron, combined with the pain relief and energy increase provided by acupuncture, seems to help me quite a bit. I have been able to wean down to one Macrobid (prophylactic to prevent infection) once a day, and I am having much less pain and urgency. The action of Elmiron is unknown, but it is believed to have 2 possible actions: 1. Rebuild the inner lining of the bladder--this supposedly takes several months; and 2. Decrease neuropathic pain associated with IC (the pain caused by constant irritation of the nerve that innervates the bladder)--I believe this is what is happening for me, since my pain decreased within 12 hours of taking the first dose. I haven't been on Elmiron long enough to say what the side effects will be--I have read they can be quite serious (increased liver enzymes, bleeding problems). My insurance pays for everything except a $30 copay every month, so cost is not an issue for me.

Elmiron for Bladder Wall Inflammation: Been on this med for 90+ days now for Interstitial Cystitis. For several years now the doctor has given me antibiotics to combat prostatitis (urgency, frequency, dripping, forcing, false alarms, bladder pain) but it never worked. After going through a cystoscopy IC was found. I take 3 capsules in the morning and 3 capsules in the evening. Tried to take 2 capsules 3x daily but it wasn't possible to work into a work schedule. I noticed a decrease in my bladder pain with mild flare-ups once in a while if I don't watch the type of foods I eat (greasy, pickles, vinegar salad dressing). It has greatly reduced the sense of urgency, not being able to hold it, and the pain. The dripping still continues but at least I don't have that pain. I did notice that if I take anything for headaches/pain such as Advil, Aleve, or Motrin my problems comes back. I guess these OTC drugs inhibit the effect of Elmiron. The only side effects I've noticed is an occasional skin irritation/scratching and some hair loss from an already receeding hairline. I don't have another check-in with the doctor for another 90 days so we'll see where I'm at with continuing this or calling it quits.

In fact, I'm off Ditropan XL now and am back to eating a full diet. :-) I rarely have symptoms now. I know it's hard to hang in there while you're waiting for it to work, but it's well worth it if it works for your IC! Visit www.ic-network.com or www.ichelp.org for more information and help on Interstitial Cystitis.

Elmiron for Bladder Wall Inflammation: I biggest complaint is that I stay so tired and emotional since I started this drug. I was also put on allergy pills, flomax and two antiscotic drugs. My doctor explained that all these working together will most benifit my condition. IF, I take them all like subscribed, I stay so weak and dizzy, that I can not function in daily life. I need to lie down most of the day and feel so helpless. If anyone else is taking these made meds and are experncing these side effects, please email me at pamd53@verizon.com Let me know if these side effects will go away. I love to work in the veg. garden and flowers and have no energy to do either.

Elmiron for Interstitial Cystitis: I have been taking ELMIRON off and on since 2005. It has helped tremendously but the price is high even with insurance! I have not had my liver enzymes checked since the beginning!

Elmiron for Interstitial cystitis: Stomach problems forced me to quit I've had two episodes of terrible stomach discomfort (episodes longer than 4 days). I've taken Elmiron two different times. Within days, I had weird stomach discomfort. Had an ultrasound all appeared normal. Diagnosed as gas. I guess I am one of the people who experience gastritis as a side effect =(
