Wellbutrin (Bupropion)

Bupropion is an antidepressant medication. Bupropion is used to treat major depressive disorder and seasonal affective disorder. The Zyban brand of bupropion is used to help people stop smoking by reducing cravings and other withdrawal effects. Bupropion may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

WELLBUTRIN®(bupropion hydrochloride)TabletsWELLBUTRIN (bupropion hydrochloride), an antidepressant of the aminoketone class, is chemically unrelated to tricyclic, tetracyclic, selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor, or other known antidepressant agents. Its structure closely resembles that of diethylpropion; it is related to phenylethylamines. It is designated as (±)-1-(3-chlorophenyl)-2-[(1,1-dimethylethyl)amino]-1-propanone hydrochloride.WELLBUTRIN is indicated for the treatment of depression. A physician considering WELLBUTRIN for the management of a patient's first episode of depression should be aware that the drug may cause generalized seizures in a dose-dependent manner with an approximate incidence of 0.4% (4/1,000). This incidence of seizures may exceed that of other marketed antidepressants by as much as 4-fold. This relative risk is only an approximate estimate because no direct comparative studies have been conducted (see WARNINGS). The efficacy of WELLBUTRIN has been established in 3 placebo-controlled trials, including 2 of approximately 3 weeks' duration in depressed inpatients and one of approximately 6 weeks' duration in depressed outpatients. The depressive disorder of the patients studied corresponds most closely to the Major Depression category of the APA Diagnostic and Statistical Manual III. Major Depression implies a prominent and relatively persistent depressed or dysphoric mood that usually interferes with daily functioning (nearly every day for at least 2 weeks); it should include at least 4 of the following 8 symptoms: change in appetite, change in sleep, psychomotor agitation or retardation, loss of interest in usual activities or decrease in sexual drive, increased fatigability, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, slowed thinking or impaired concentration, and suicidal ideation or attempts. Effectiveness of WELLBUTRIN in long-term use, that is, for more than 6 weeks, has not been systematically evaluated in controlled trials. Therefore, the physician who elects to use WELLBUTRIN for extended periods should periodically reevaluate the long-term usefulness of the drug for the individual patient.

Wellbutrin for Bipolar I disorder: First antidepressant to work for me! I went through every available anti depressant on the market before I tried Wellbutrin and had no expectation that it would help. I have bipolar I depressed and had two episodes of depression each year for twenty years. Each one lasted 2-4 months. Wellbutrin broke this pattern. Until this point I had given up on medication and was very close to giving up hope. It was easy for me to control mania with Lithium and Tegretol helped the depression a bit...but Prozac and Zoloft didn't make a dent in my own variety of depression. Now I take Lamicatl in addition to Wellbutrin and that has prevented the "low level depression" I still sometimes experienced with Wellbutrin and has been the best combo yet.

Wellbutrin for Premenstrual Syndrome: Not sure if I need it and not sure if it's working I really can't tell much of a difference. I think at first I seemed less moody but now I really don't see a difference. I still get nervous and anxious because of work related stress. I still also have pms symptoms for a couple of days before my period. I've been very overworked and continue to have work related stress with no break in sight but I never really felt depressed and I've never felt suicidal. I mostly get aggitated and angry about the stress that I'm under. I've seemed a little better at times but now it seems that the meds aren't making a difference. Is it dangerous for me to take Wellbutrin if I don't really need it? My memory has been bad both before and after taking Wellbutrin but my doctor seems to think it might be associated with the stress I'm under...but I'm forgetful even when I'm not stressed. For example I often take out my medicine and then can't remember if I actually took a pill. I don't think I have depression. I feel like there's something else going on...but what do I know.

Wellbutrin for Depression: Wasn't the right med for me 12/19/04 I had to be taken off the wellbutrin due to extreme fatigue and I was feeing somewhat overmedicated, zombie like. My depression actually increased. I liked the med in the beginning but ultimately it wasn't the right med for me. Lexapro and xanax seem to do the trick. My doctor is running blood tests to see why I am so fatigued. Fatigue was the original reason for the wellbutrin prescription but ultimatly made things worse. Good luck to all. 11/29/04 A little over 2 weeks now. Energy a little better but may be due to increase in exercise. No side effects, anxiety fine. Not sure if it is doing anything to help, my energy level is still really low. Lots of fatigue. I check in with my doctor next week, might need a dose change? 11/16/04 Day 3 and no side effects, anxiety has been fine. No difference in energy level. 11/14/04 I began having anxiety, panic attacks about 4 1/2 months ago. I was prescribed 20mg. Lexapro and .25mg of xanax as needed. I'm doing great except for experiencing extreme fatigue. My doctor prescribed me a morning dose of Wellbutrin to help with fatigue. I was very anxious about trying this med but finally got the courage up and took one this morning. I felt very "foggy" headed and am still experiencing fatigue but understand these things take time. If anyone is on similar meds I would love to hear how things are going for you. Good luck to all.

Wellbutrin for Borderline Personality Disorder: Wellbutrin For Depression & BPD Wellbutrin has been prescribed to me merely as an adjunct to Prozac for depression. Recently because of an "episode" Quetiapine has also been added to my regimn. Because Wellbutrin has never been used in isolation in my case it is hard to say how effective it really is. Although my Doctor believes it must be playing an important rule as I have been on it for several years.

Wellbutrin for Depression: I started with Wellbutrin to stop smoking. The impact on my depression was amazing! When my doctor asked my reaction, I told him I was astonished when I found myself laughing. Twice I tried the generic (once for 6 weeks; once for a month) and it did not work for me. My cost for the Wellbutrin is four times the cost of the generic. I do not know how much longer I can take Wellbutrin; my insurance charges are four times greater for Wellbutrin than the generic. I wish the medical profession would limit the practice of medicine by insurance companies.

Wellbutrin for Borderline Personality Disorder: Odd side effect! I took Wellbutrin-SR for about 6 weeks. During that time, I began to crave alcohol. I have never been a drinker since it often gives me migraines. Four drinks a year was my average. But I started drinking on a daily basis and was sometimes having 4 drinks a day and occasionally even before noon! I knew this was NOT me and I discontinued the med. Within a week, my craving for alcohol was gone and I have had only one drink in the 2 months since I quit Wellbutrin. I had read that this could be a possible side effect with some SSRIs, but never dreamed it could happen to someone like me who isn't into drinking alcohol at all!

Wellbutrin for Depression: wellbutrin SR Wellbutrin worked for me. However, after 6 months, it lost it's effectiveness. I usually switch to SAM-E for 2 months and go back to Wellbutrin after that. Lately, though 150 doesn't seem to be doing it for me. I think I'll have to go to a higher dose. It's like a vicious cycle with these drugs. They all work for a while, then stop. Then dosage has to be increased. Then it stops working again. Then you have to switch meds, and the same thing happens again, etc., etc.

Wellbutrin for Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS; CFIDS; M.E.): Within a month or so of initiating treatment, I was up and around a good bit, and within three months, was able to resume some activities like occasional hiking and travel that I never thought I would be able to do again. I have been able to tolerate going back to work part-time, and would say that as long as I take the drug, I am functioning at around 75% of where I was before I got sick with CFIDS. My cognitive functioning and sleep issues are both greatly improved as well. I have had no side effects apart from some mild weight loss. I, too, was concerned about habituation and loss of efficacy, but more than two years after starting treatment, I am still seeing the same benefits of Wellbutrin on my CFIDS as I did at the outset.

Wellbutrin for Social phobia (Social anxiety disorder): fleeting Let me start off by saying that this is the second time being on this drug, this time I'm on twice the dosage I was on before. So where to go from there, well, the drug works, unfortunately it only works for a couple of weeks. Even those two weeks had their ups and downs, now after a month I'm back to where I was before starting: mostly down, with the rare up. I just feel "blah" all day, just following the motions of life, waiting for the day to end. Side effects for me have been excessive (and I mean /excessive/) sweating, random "flushed" feeling, hot for no reason, happens to me sitting at the computer with virtually no stimulation. I can no longer take caffeine without it making me have tremors, and a (bad) buzzed feeling. Before, I'd have caffeine on the rare occassion and feel great. I'm really impatient, and quite irritable/snappy. Even my general anxiety has come back now that I'm on this. The first time I took this, it worked for the same 2 week period, then didn't seem to do anything, but the side-effects certainly weren't quite so noticeable. I wouldn't say this is necessarily a bad drug, it just strikes me as being much like caffeine, if taken just every so often one feels the effects, but if taken regularly the effects diminish.
